Junior Neighbourhood Watch - Helicopter visit to our school

Monash PS was visited by the Police Air Wing as part of the Junior Neighbourhood Watch program taught by Mrs Donnehay for the students in years 4 & 5. The Junior Neighbourhood Watch program has been developed by Mrs Donnehay along with Res O’Rourke and the Victorian Police. You might have seen the article featuring our school in the local paper. Following are some recounts written by Matthew and Claire in Mr Sowersby’s class.

By Matthew 3/4S

On Monday the 23rd of June the Police Air Wing landed on our school oval. They work 24 hours a day. They also work at Essendon Airport. They rescue people and save them. Brad Newton told us about the helicopter. Brad Newton told us it has two engines. They also showed us other things in the helicopter. Then they went.

By Claire I 3/4SW

On Monday we had the rescue people visit us and they came in a helicopter. We had a person talk to us about the helicopter and his name was Brad. He told our class that if you see a helicopter don’t wave to it because they might think you need help. After a while he let us have a look inside the helicopter and there was a lot of buttons. He also told us at the bottom of the helicopter there was a camera that they could catch robbers with. They got the helicopter from France and it was yellow so they painted it blue and white. The helicopter cost 12 million to 13 million dollars. Brad is the person who goes down on the winch and rescues people from oceans and cliffs. The winch is 100m long. Roger is the pilot for the helicopter and when Brad is not saving people he is the navigator. They also have a spotlight at the front to see at night.

AIM - Statewide Testing

The AIM is a comprehensive assessment and reporting program that helps teachers to better measure student achievement, and supports strategies to lift students' literacy and numeracy levels. Statewide testing, a component of AIM, will be conducted for Years 3, 5 and 7 students in English and Mathematics from July 21 to August 6. Students will complete activities, which will be both locally and centrally assessed.  Parents will receive reports on the achievement of their children on the AIM tests.

More information about AIM is available online at http://www.sofweb.vic.edu.au/assess/aim/index.htm
