Dear Parents,

Science Evening Wednesday August 20

What a night! You would agree that our Science Night was a wonderful celebration of Science in primary education. Children, parents and teachers discovering science together.

Constable Sandy from Police in Schools Program and myself had a challenging task judging the entries for the Science awards. The following entries were chosen as winners:

·          Bridie 1\2W for a garden snail

·          Madeline P/1C for a great spotty worm

·          Sarah 3/4S for a caterpillar habitat

·          John 3/4S for a spider habitat.

Year 5/6 awards will be announced at assembly on Monday.

Science Night Raffle Winners were:

·          1st Prize Sam Dawson – Swim School Vouchers to the value of $99

·          2nd Prize Varma K – Tupperware and chocolates

Special thanks to Catherine Whiting for organising the event, the parents and teachers who helped with fundraising, canteen and preparation, Constable Sandy and to Mariela Martinez (Ms Whiting’s mother-in-law) for helping in the canteen.

Book Week

Celebrating Oceans of Books took on a vibrant spirit in the school as children and teachers dressed up as book characters and participated in wonderful literature based activities throughout the day. Thanks to Sue Bowden for organising a fabulous day.

Here are our book character winners holding their certificates and prizes.

Prep Transition

Prep Transition parent information evening was held on Tuesday and the winner of the Swim School Lessons to the value of $99.00 was the August Family. Congratulations!

Basketball Champion!

In the last newsletter I mentioned that Christine would be accompanying her son to Darwin to participate in the National Schools’ Basketball Competition. Josh had a very successful tour with Victoria being the undefeated winners of the Nation Title. Personally, Josh was awarded MVP (Most Valuable Player) for the match against Northern Territory and in the top scorers group for the tournament. Great effort Josh! I am sure we will hear a lot more about Josh’s basketball career in the future.

Working bee last Saturday

The weather finally beat us. Disappointingly, the weather kept many away from our term 3 working bee. Special thanks to the participating families for braving the poor conditions to help. We were able to, prune the garden between unit 3 and the basketball court, chop down 3 dead trees and weed and mulch the junior playground area and gardens.

Over the next month the environment committee will be calling for new painting contracts. If you have experience in this area we would appreciate help to scrutinise the contracts when they come in to ensure we make the best decision for the school. Please contact Christine in the office if you can help.

Family/Home details

Christine sent out home/family details sheets please check to ensure the details are correct, if not write changes on the sheet and return them to school at your earliest convenience. The details we collect are done so in accordance with the Privacy Act and kept only for the purpose of administrative school business. It is important that we have accurate records on our system for the wellbeing of your children.

 House Athletics Sports

The students had a great day at the Monash University Athletics Field. As you can see from the photos children of all ages tried for personal bests as they competed. Some students will represent our school in the coming weeks in district competitions and hopefully beyond! Special thanks to Mr. Sowersby for organising the event and to the many parents who helped on the day.

Regards,

Lee Ann Green

Acting Principal

School Leadership

It has been wonderful having Mrs. Lee Ann Green as our Acting Principal whilst Mrs. O’Riley is on sick leave.  Region has advised that Mrs. O’Riley will be on leave for the remainder of the year.  As Mrs. Green will commence Long Service Leave (approved from 12 months ago), we will have Kerry Robertson coming to the school for Term 4.  Kerry is the Assistant Principal at Mullum Primary School.

As School Council President please feel free to contact me or fellow School Councillors if you have any concerns regarding this or other school council related matters.

Living with Parkinson’s

The Department of Education and Training have asked us to pass on the following information in this newsletter.

An exciting, innovative and interactive television program is being produced as a feature of National Parkinson’s Awareness Week which is being held from 7 to 13 September.

The program will go to air ‘live’ on Wednesday, 10 September from 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm and will offer an opportunity to share the latest information and for viewers to speak to the experts through telephone or fax.

This program will be produced in the Schools’ Television studio of the Department of Education and Training in Melbourne and will be delivered via the Optus satellite to Victorian government and Catholic school sites, the ‘Rural Health Education Network’, ‘Queensland Health’ sites and the ‘Health Channel’.

To participate in the program viewers will need to go to their nearest school or health centre. Viewers can find out which venue will be the most appropriate for them by contacting either Parkinson’s Victoria on 9551 1122, or Schools’ Television on 9637 3380.
